The winery was founded in 1850 by Chilean landowner Christian Lanz in honor of his wife. Viña Carmen is officially the oldest winery in Chile and the “rediscoverer” of the Carmenére berry variety, as the berry variety was identified in the Maipo wine year of Viña Carmen. The color is more intense than average ruby red with a violet shade The aroma is spicy berry. Ripe blackcurrants, dark stone fruits, sweet spices, mint and black pepper. The end of the aroma is complemented by herbal spiciness with a note of bitter chocolate. The taste is medium-bodied and complexly berry, with notes of overripe blackcurrants, ripe wild berries, dark stone fruits and dried herbs with balanced spiciness. The aftertaste is longer than average and spicy-herbal berry. The wine is fermented in stainless steel barrels, malolactically fermented and 40% of the wine develops for 6 months in American and French oak barrels.
