The winery was founded in 1850 by Chilean landowner Christian Lanz in honor of his wife. Viña Carmen is officially the oldest winery in Chile and the “rediscoverer” of the Carmenére berry variety, as the berry variety was identified in the Maipo wine year of Viña Carmen. Purple in color with a violet undertone. The aroma is herbal and berry. Feel ripe blackcurrants, dark stone fruit, sweet spices, green pepper, bay leaf and tobacco leaf. The end of the aroma adds a blushing spiciness with a nuance of bitter chocolate and roasted coffee beans. The taste is fuller than average and lusciously berry, ripe blackcurrants, wild berries, dark stone fruits, green pepper and herbs with balanced tannic spiciness. The aftertaste is dense and berry spicy-herbal. The grapes are hand-picked from vineyards located on the slopes of the Andes, the wine is fermented in stainless steel barrels, 80% of the wine develops for 10 months in small French oak barrels and 2 months in the bottle
