The winery was founded in 1850 by Chilean landowner Christian Lanz in honor of his wife. Viña Carmen is officially the oldest winery in Chile and the “rediscoverer” of the Carmenére berry variety, as the berry variety was identified in the Maipo wine year of Viña Carmen. Low intensity garnet red in color Light ripe red berries, ripe raspberries-strawberries, red currants and fresh red stone fruits can be felt in the aroma. A little dried herbs and incense smoke are added to the end of the aroma. The taste is on the lighter side and has a velvety berry-juicy texture, you can feel ripe wild berries, raspberries and strawberries, red stone fruits, pohlia and cranberries. The aftertaste is long, with bright fresh berries, which combine in the aftertaste with slightly spicy-herbal berry tannins. The wine is fermented in open stainless steel barrels and is not aged in oak barrels.
