In 1978, the first vines were planted in the Horse Heaven Hill area on the north bank of the Columbia River, and in 1982 Columbia Crest Winery was established. In 1990, Robert Parker, one of the world's leading wine critics, named Columbia Crest Winery one of the world's 24 "Best Value Wineries" in his publication The Wine Advocate. In 1997, Columbia Crest Winery was voted the winner of the “Best Winery for Value in the United States” category by readers of Wine Spectator, the leading US wine magazine, as the only winery outside of California. Columbia Crest Winery is owned by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates group. Dark ruby red in color. The aroma is berry like blackcurrant, you can feel ripe black forest berries, blackcurrant jam, overripe field berries and blueberries and dried herbs. The taste is fuller than average, dry and berry dense. Ripe black berries, prunes, blackcurrants, chokeberries and some dark chocolate with pastry spices. The aftertaste is long and uniformly berry, supported by slightly spicy tannins. Grapes are harvested from the Yakima Valley, Horse Heaven Hills and Wahluke Slope growing areas, the wine is fermented in stainless steel barrels and matures in new and old oak barrels of various sizes for 12-18 months.
