The winery was founded in 1859 by Antonio Alves Càlemi, who started importing precious wood from Brazil, but so that the ships would not sail to Brazil empty, he started exporting wine there. In 1965, António Alves Calém Jr. continued his father's work and by then Càlem had grown into a shipowner with his own fleet. Since 1993, Sogevinus SGPS S.A. belongs to group with cellar stocks of over 8 million bottles. The winery has become known for its old Tawny-type port wines. The wine develops in oak barrels and is blended from wines with an average of 10 years of barrel development at the Calemi winery in Villa Nova de Gaia, Oporto.
