The winery was founded in 1859 by Antonio Alves Càlemi, who started importing precious wood from Brazil, but so that the ships would not sail to Brazil empty, he started exporting wine there. In 1965, António Alves Calém Jr. continued his father's work and by then Càlem had grown into a shipowner with his own fleet. Since 1993, Sogevinus SGPS S.A. belongs to group with cellar stocks of over 8 million bottles. The winery has become known for its old Tawny-type port wines. Medium intensity ruby ​​red in colour. Aroma with a light smoky note, hints of dried red berries, cocoa beans, dried plums and coffee beans. Sweet spices and black pepper are added to the end of the aroma. The taste is spicy berry and elegant, you can feel milk chocolate, dried red berries, berry jelly and cocoa. the aftertaste is long and with a slightly pungent spicy finish. The grapes grow in the upper reaches of the Douro River, in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior growing areas. The fermentation of the wine is interrupted on day 2 by adding grape distillate with 77% alcohol content, which leaves the wine with a high residual sugar content. The wine develops in oak barrels and is blended from wines with an average of 3 years of barrel development at the Calemi winery in Oporto, Villa Nova de Gaia.
