The winery was founded in 1859 by Antonio Alves Càlemi, who started importing precious wood from Brazil, but so that the ships would not sail to Brazil empty, he started exporting wine there. In 1965, António Alves Calém Jr. continued his father's work and by then Càlem had grown into a shipowner with his own fleet. Since 1993, Sogevinus SGPS S.A. belongs to group with cellar stocks of over 8 million bottles. The winery has become known for its old Tawny-type port wines. The color is intense dark red. Ripe dark berries, raisins, sweet spices, cinnamon, anise, figs can be felt in the aroma, the end of the aroma is characterized by spicy tannins. The taste is sweet and spicy, you can feel nuts and dried black berries, raisins and roasted hazelnuts with dark chocolate. The aftertaste is long and with structural tannins. The grapes are picked from the upper reaches of the Douro River, in the best Douro Superior region, from the Quinta do Arnozelo winery. The fermentation of the wine is interrupted on day 2 by adding grape distillate with 77% alcohol content, which leaves the wine with a high residual sugar content. The wine is aged for 2 years in oak barrels at the Calemi winery in Villa Nova de Gaia, Oporto, before bottling.
