The winery was founded in 1859 by Antonio Alves Càlemi, who started importing precious wood from Brazil, but so that the ships would not sail to Brazil empty, he started exporting wine there. In 1965, António Alves Calém Jr. continued his father's work and by then Càlem had grown into a shipowner with his own fleet. Since 1993, Sogevinus SGPS S.A. belongs to group with cellar stocks of over 8 million bottles. The winery has become known for its old Tawny-type port wines. Creamy straw yellow in color. The aroma is overripe fruity, you can feel yellow apples, sweet melon and ripe citrus. A little floral spice is added to the end of the aroma. Fruity-waxy on the palate, you can feel ripe peaches, oranges, pomelo and tropical fruits. The aftertaste is long and aromatically fruity. The grapes grow in the upper reaches of the Douro River, in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior growing areas. The fermentation of the wine is interrupted on day 2 by adding grape distillate with 77% alcohol content, which leaves the wine with a high residual sugar content. The wine develops in large oak barrels and is blended from wines with 2-3 years of barrel development in the Calemi winery in Oporto, Villa Nova de Gaia.
